Dorothy O'Connor's photographs and installations feature thoughtfully composed and hand-crafted scenes combining elements of still-life, portraiture, landscape, and performance. The images included in this exhibition are select pieces from three bodies of work, spanning the past 16 years. Her creative process is driven predominantly by her personal story, therefore these images represent a sort of fantastical visual memoir. Her themes explore various personally meaningful subjects both broad and intimate; from animal welfare and environmental concerns to friends, family, and community. She is inspired by nature and often uses elements and materials collected from the natural world to tell her story. She enjoys creating many of the components in each piece by hand. This technique does not facilitate prolificness but instead allows her to become fully immersed in each small, beloved detail.
Dorothy O'Connor graduated with degrees in Literature and Studio Arts. Her constructed works combine elements of photography, installation and public art. She has received grants from Possible Futures, FLUX, Forward Arts Foundation, Art on the Beltline, Crusade For Art and most recently, Fulton County Arts and Culture to present her installations as public art. In 2013, she was artist in residence at Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art in Nashville where she built and presented her installation, "Shelter." She is a Hambidge Fellow and was part of the Hambidge Hive Collective in 2017. 2019 concluded with a solo show of her photography series, Scenes, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia in Atlanta. Ms. O'Connor's work is part of the permanent collections at MOCA GA, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, the Center for Fine Art Photography, Fulton County Arts and Culture, and is included in numerous private collections.
The Hambidge Cross-Pollination Art Lab in Atlanta celebrates the creative process by bringing together visual artists, dancers, writers, poets, musicians, and creatives of all kinds to share ideas and experiment.
